Product Description

Why choose 5-HTP by Seeking Health?

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an essential role in mood regulation, melatonin production, and appetite control. Many mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are associated with inadequate serotonin levels. Management of these disorders focuses on reestablishing healthy brain serotonin levels. As a precursor of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, serotonin can exert a direct, favorable effect on sleep regulation. Low levels of serotonin can lead to low melatonin levels, and consequently to a disrupted sleep cycle and poor sleep quality. Serotonin is also a key player in appetite regulation, in part by helping to signal satiety. Additionally, research indicates that abnormal serotonin levels may play a role in both fibromyalgia and migraine headaches.

Serotonin is manufactured in the brain from the essential amino acid, tryptophan. Once carried across the blood-brain barrier, tryptophan is metabolized to serotonin via the intermediate 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Although serotonin is present elsewhere in the body, it is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. Consequently, the brain must provide for all its serotonin needs through synthesis within the brain.

In order to maintain healthy serotonin levels, the brain requires an adequate supply of tryptophan. However, many obstacles can impede tryptophan transport into the brain, including competition with other amino acids for transport carriers across the blood-brain barrier, activity of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase (which catalyzes the conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP), and competing needs for tryptophan elsewhere in the body. Unlike tryptophan, 5-HTP can easily cross the blood-brain barrier without a transport carrier and is transported into the brain without competition. Experimental and clinical studies have found that 5-HTP is an effective means of raising brain serotonin levels, as well as levels of melatonin, thereby promoting beneficial changes for many individuals with low levels of these important brain chemicals.

Key Benefits and Actions of 5-HTP by Seeking Health :

Many studies have cited benefits of supplemental 5-HTP in mood regulation, sleep quality, and appetite control in individuals with mood imbalances, disrupted sleep cycles, and unhealthy weight levels, respectively.

  • 5HTP and GABA7/12/12 1:12 PM
    • Hello. Wondering if 5HTP and GABA can be used together? What is your recommendation? Thank you!
    • Hello -

GABA and 5-HTP may be taken together for most people. I recommend starting with one at a time first to see how you respond. If you respond well enough to one, then the other may not be needed.

Both GABA and 5-HTP work to calm one down so be sure to not take too much of either. If you take both, you will likely need less of each one due to their synergistic affect on neurotransmission.

Be sure to discuss with your doctor if it is recommended for you to take GABA or 5-HTP.

  • 5-HTP vs l-Tryptophan4/22/13 2:52 PM
    • Hi Dr lynch

Low serotonin can cause constipation. Which one is better as supplemen for thist: l-tryptophan or 5htp?
And also, for depression, is it ok to take this supplement in addition to Effexor?
And again which one: l-tryptophan or 5htp?
      Thank yoi

    • Hello -

5-HTP is safer to take than L-Tryptophan and is more direct to supporting serotonin production.

If you are taking Effexor, you will have to talk with your doctor about 5-HTP as Effexor helps recycle serotonin. If you make more serotonin with 5-HTP, you may make too much.

Keep in mind that SSRI medications only slow the breakdown of serotonin - they don't make it. Thus, if you are low in serotonin already, than the SSRI won't help much.

      Talk with your doctor.
