Questions on ProBiota 12 Powder - 200 Billion CFU's - 60 Grams

- Should my toddler take the probiotic that I ordered for me? The infant one says for kids up to two years old, but she is 3 and a half. With the powder, do i just mix it in with my food or a drink? I was a little confused.
Your toddler can take the ProBiota 12. It is what I give my boys who are above 2 yrs old.Give them less than your dose – give about 1/8th teaspoon for her to a 1/4 teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder. You can give the ProBiota powders directly to the mouth. No need to mix in food or water. You may mix in food or drink but no need as the ProBiota tastes good.

- Can a person take too much probiotics? I have been on probiotics for about 6 months. But recently has switched to Seeking Health Probiota and taking the powder right now (switched to evening as you recommended).
My question, can a person take too much probiotic? How long should a person take a probiotic - should this be taken daily as maintenance?
Do probiotics help push out parasites?
As always, appreciate your recommendations. - Hello - In short: 1. Yes a person can take too much probiotic 2. A person needs to take a probiotic daily just like a multivitamin, fish oil and vitamin D3 3. Yes specific probiotics can push out and prevent parasites. In depth: Yes, a person can take too much probiotic, especially if it is single strain or a couple strains. Example, I had a patient who was autistic and could not speak. There are numerous reasons for autistic children; however, it turned out that he was given high dose lactobacilus daily by his parents. I ordered a lab test which showed he had very elevated lactate levels and very elevated lactobacilus. Elevated lactate levels can cause speech problems. He was prescribed various nutrients to bring down the lactate and the lactobacilus was discontinued and contraindicated. That is a very potent example of taking too much probiotic. Yes, a person needs to take a probiotic daily which is multistrain and in not too high a dose. One needs to take a multistrain probiotic to ensure that there is not just one type of bacteria dominating the environment of the digestive system. There are numerous issues with probiotics which you must educate yourself on. Currently you are taking ProBiota 12 Powder at dinner. Taking ProBiota 12 Powder longer than 2-3 months is not recommended unless one has inflammatory bowel disease which is not healing. I recomend taking ProBiota 12 capsules after 1 month of ProBiota 12 Powder. ProBiota 12 Powder is recommended to take at 1/2 teaspoon 10 minutes after dinner for those having: - been on antibiotics, - digestive issues, - has not taken probiotics for a long period of time - has parasites - has yeast overgrowth - has an autoimmune disorder Yes, Probiotics can prevent and treat parasite infections. The main way probiotics prevent parasite infections is by preventing the parasites from binding to the intestinal wall. Probiotics themselves bind to the intestinal walls protecting us from environmental exposures and harmful bacteria from entering our bodies. For long term use, I recommend taking 1 capsule of ProBiota 12 taken 10 minutes after dinner. Should you have any questions, please post below. Best, Dr Ben

- How do the live strains of bacteria in ProBiota powder survive being doused in stomach acid?
- The strains of bacteria are protected by a natural vegetable polysaccharide which surrounds them. This delivers the beneficial bacteria into the small intestine undamaged and available to form colonies. The polysaccharide breaks down in the stomach. Ideally, take ProBiota 12 Powder after you brush your teeth at night. I am finding this to help prevent cavities! In health, Dr Ben

- ProBiota 12 Powder Questionp2/23/12 7:52 PM
- Dr. Ben,
I was reading your response that taking too much probiotic can be a bad thing and after 1 month switch to a capsule. I just started to give my 4 year old daughter 1/8th teaspoon after dinner as you recommended to boost her immune system . Should I stop giving her after one month or is it something I can continue to give her as maintainence just like the multivitamin? - Hello - You can reduce to 1/16 teaspoon which provides 25 billion beneficial bacteria. This is a solid amount for her. This is the amount I give my children on a nearly nightly basis - ages 3, 6, 9. This is the same amount that is found in 1 capsule of ProBiota 12. This is a good amount for maintenance - you can reduce even further to 12 billion once her bowels, digestion and immune system to be in good order. Vitamin D3 is critical for her immune system also. Make sure she is getting 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 per 25 pounds of body weight on a daily basis. There are 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 per drop of Vitamin D360: http://www.seekinghealth.com/vitamin-d-drops-liquid-vitamin-d360.html If you have not seen our chewable Optimal Multivitamin, this may be useful for her as well. I give my 3 yr old a 1/2 tablet in the AM with breakfast and 1/2 in the afternoon - at lunch. http://www.seekinghealth.com/optimal-multivitamin-60-chewable-tablets-seeking-health.html Hope she is doing well ;) Best Dr Ben

- Dr. Ben,
- Do you recommend taking ProBiota 12 powder before surgery 2/29/12 6:38 AM
- Hi, I am going for a lapparoscopy in 3 weeks. I was wondering if you recommend taking the pro biota powder before or after the processors? I had oral surgery in august and took high dose of penicillin which I believe ruined my gut flora. I got skin irration behind my ears, underarms and hip bones. Most went away but I still have the irritation on my hip bones that looks likes it getting worse. I put wheat germ oil on itnto stop the itch but it's not curing it. Do you think the pro biota could be beneficial? I am homozygous C677t, PIA-1 4g/4g, hosimoto. Going for laparoscopy to determine if I have endomitrious due to infertility. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated.
- Hello - ProBiota 12 Powder is a good idea to take before surgery. It will help prevent hospital-borne infections (C diffcile is the big one) Consider taking 1/4 teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder after dinner. You may experience some gas and bloating for the first few days. This is normal as the bad bacteria die off. I also highly recommend adding Saccharomyces Boulardii and taking 2 capsules after dinner along with the ProBiota 12 Powder. Saccharomyces Boulardii helps eliminate harmful yeasts and is not killed by antibiotics. You likely will be given antibiotics after the surgery - and perhaps before. If you are prescribed antibiotics, make sure to take the ProBiota 12 Powder after the antibiotic by 2 hrs. Example, take the antibiotic at 7 pm and then the ProBiota 12 Powder at 9 pm. Saccharomyces Boulardii is here: http://www.seekinghealth.com/saccharomyces-boulardii-probiotic.html If you find you have endometriosis, then let me know and I can help you with that. DIM + I3C is useful for this. http://www.seekinghealth.com/dim-supplement-indole-3-carbinol-dim.html In health, Dr Ben

- Will this help with my overall health?6/19/12 2:06 PM
- I had a full knee replacement about three weeks ago (May 30). I have had three acupuncture treatments since then and am taking a number of supplements, some of which include - ginger, tumeric, cayenne, CoQ10, cordyceps/reishi extract, chaga mushroom tea, green blend including chorella, spirlina, wheatgrass, alfalfa juices, a fruit blend including noni and maqui powder, vitamin C, high potency minerals and a few others. I am still taking Vicodin and Senna Plus occasionally. I don't need the Senna every day as I am taking in a lot of fiber. No other medication , however, I did have Lovelox but am off it now. My swelling is down considerably but there is still a ways to go before the swelling is gone. MY knee and leg muscles are very tight but in site of it, I do my exercises twice daily. A physical therapist comes three time a week. My main concern is my general overall health/strength, but I would like to do everything I can to get my muscles relaxed and a reduction in swelling. All of my health care professions indicate that I am doing well. So - Would you brecommend the Probiota Powder? And what else?
- Hello - It is great to see people trying to optimize their healing - you get better so much faster and the likelihood of staying better increases. Yes - ProBiota 12 Powder (suggested amount of 1/4 tsp) taken after dinner is recommended - this is especially important post-surgery due to the hospital-borne infections and antibiotic use. I would make sure you are taking about 100 mg of quality CoQ10 - such as ubiquinone or ubiquinol. Vitamin E - 400 IU taken daily if you do not have a bleeding disorder is also suggested to assist healing and reduction of inflammation. D-Ribose Powder - adding 5 grams in a liter of water and drinking throughout the day. Adding some electrolytes to it or 1.5 teaspoons of Optimal Vitamin C Powder is also recommended. Castor oil packs are also fantastic. Apply a liberal amount of castor oil over the area (if ok with your doctor. Do not apply over open wounds and do not apply over your stitches). Do this twice daily or so to help reduce the swelling. Doing contrast hydrotherapy is also very VERY useful in reducing swelling. I would look for systemic enzymes also such as Wobenzym. Take this away from food to help reduce scar tissue. Ensuring adequate EPA/DHA is also critical for healing. Consider adding 2 teaspoons of Optimal Fish Oil to your smoothie or take directly by mouth with any meal of the day. Magnesium is also very critical for your muscles - along with the D-Ribose. Consider taking 1-2 capsules of Optimal Magnesium two to three times daily. This will also help with your sleep and bowel movements. Gentle massage over the area or at least lymphatic massage also known as lymphatic drainage may also prove useful. In the future, once you are recovered, you may want to reduce the load on your knees with the MBT shoes. They are excellent. http://us.mbt.com/Default.aspx?lang=en-US Keep me posted how you are healing! ;) In health, Dr Ben

- Too Strong?6/28/12 8:27 AM
- I have been taking ProBiota 12 powder for about three days, but have had bad diarrhea during this time. Is this probiotic too strong for me?
Hello -
One should start out with a smaller amount of ProBiota 12 Powder unless directed by your physician.
Probiota 12 Powder is a potent probiotic powder and may cause die-off of harmful bacteria while it works on restoring healthy bacteria.
If one starts out with a smaller amount of probiotic powder, then the die-off is not as intense and the restoration phase still occurs.
Perhaps reducing to 1/8th teaspoon after dinner will work best for you.
Please discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

- safe for pregnancy?7/25/12 7:47 PM
- Dr. Ben,
I was looking at this powder to use during pregnancy, but noticed the extra ingredient of inulin derived from chicory root. I have read that chicory root is one herb to be avoided during pregnancy as it is not safe, so I am writing to confirm whether this product is safe for pregnancy?
Thanks so much,
Jennifer Jennifer -
The inulin is a prebiotic that provides nutrition for the probiotics. There is no harm of using prebiotics during pregnancy.
If you are still concerned, you may use ProBiota Sensitive. This is also a multistrain probiotic containing 25 billion beneficial bacteria per vegetarian capsule and contains no inulin.
Do ask your OB and/or midwife their thoughts as well.

- Dr. Ben,
- almost 2 years11/13/12 1:34 PM
- My daughter is on antibiotics for a lengthy period of time to comabat the early stage of Lyme Disease. I think it is time to put her on an antibiotic and she will be two years old in three months. Should she take Probiota 12 or the Probiota infant? She is only about 20 lbs. Why is 2 years the magic number? Or would the Probiota 12 be better but at a lower dosage?
Hello -
In this situation, I would consider the following recommendations - with approval from your doctor:- ProBIota 12 Powder: 1/8 - 1/4 tsp taken 2 hours away from the antibiotics. Ideally taken after dinner or if that is not possible, before bed.
- Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule in the AM and 1 along with the ProBiota 12 Powder. You can open the capsule and put it in her food or drink. Ideally best to put the powder on a bite of food and then take the whole amount this way. If mixed in juice or a few bites of food, you may lose a significant portion of the nutrient.
- ProBiota Immune: 1/2 scoop mixed with applesauce and a touch of maple syrup or whatever can mask the flavor. Can be taken anytime with a meal. She may need this twice a day or may need more. Depends on how her digestive system is doing. Keep a close eye.
Work closely with an integrative physician to be sure her digestion stays healthy.

- d-lactate11/21/12 12:05 PM
- Do the bacteria in this powder produce d-lactate? I suffer from CFS/MCS and I'm looking for a high-strength probiotic, but am wondering if I might be better with a product which doesn't add to possible lactate overload. Thanks for your help.
Hello -
There are two forms of lactate:- D Lactate and L Lactate
The elevated lactate that is found in CFS/MCS is typically L-lactate, which is due to a blockage in the pyruvate pathway.
If your body cannot turn glucose into energy, your body will then have elevated levels of L-lactate.
In order to lower L-lactate levels, one may consider:
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
- CoQ10
- Biotin
- Pantothenic Acid
- B Complex
- Acetyl-L-Carnitine
- D-Ribose
D-Lactate levels are supposedly produced from high levels of lactobacilus bacteria or other bacteria which may be pathogenic.
If one is found to have elevated D-lactate levels, then consider a probiotic that is free of any lactobacilus bacteria.
Methods to help reduce D-lactate levels:
