  • Neti Use and Inhalation Therapy6/16/11 8:25 AM
    • How do you recommend using the neti pot--do you breath the vapor off water mixed with herbs. If so, what mixture?
    • Hello - The ceramic neti pot is used to wash your sinuses out with a mixture of salt, baking soda and filtered water. Prepare the Nettie the Elephant's sinus wash solution by adding a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt. Fill with warm filtered tap water. Avoid chlorinated tap water as this irritates the sinus mucosa and lining. Stir well with a clean finger. You seem to be asking about Inhalation Therapy. That is using essential oils, herbs and inhaling the aromas over a bowl of hot chlorine-free water with your head covered with a towel. This is a different therapy and is useful for killing microbes in your sinuses - especially if you use sea salt along with a drop or two of tea tree oil, thyme oil, rosemary oil, and cedar oil. Inhalation is not effective though until you wash your sinuses out with a ceramic neti pot. Washing the sinuses out and relieving the sinus congestion allows the inhalation vapor to reach your mucus membranes and effectively kill the microbes attached to them. To further support sinus health, consider N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) and Microbial Defense. The NAC thins the mucus and the Microbial Defense gets into your system and helps support your immunity so it can remove the harmful bacteria, yeasts or fungi present. Best, Dr Ben

  • Using Neti Salt w/Saline vs Only Saline6/30/11 12:18 PM
    • What is the difference between using a Neti-Pot (w/ Saline) and just rinsing the nasal mucosa with Saline? This is for a family member with Allergies. My thought is that the Neti-Pot is more thorough with the force of the irrigation (plus you can additional things), yet I’m not sure if that’s the most significant difference. Your thoughts as well?
    • Without a neti pot, one cannot really get into the sinuses well if you just rinse the nose with saline. They’ll still have allergies as the allergen is likely residing in the sinuses, not just the entrance to the nose. With a neti pot, you get the water deep into the sinuses where the pollen sits.
