Questions on Enema Instructional Booklet by Dr. Benjamin Lynch, N.D
- Blood pressure1/17/13 5:13 PM
- I just received my kit. In the instruction booklet, it says under the section those who should not have enemas, those with high blood pressure.
Why is that?
What blood pressure readings in your view qualify one as having high blood pressure?
Hello -
The idea of enemas potentially interacting with blood pressure comes from the fact you may absorb some of the water from the enema. This increases blood volume and thus an increase in pressure.
The other reason for potentially causing increased blood pressure is a loss of specific electrolytes - namely potassium and magnesium.
If you are doing a high volume enema (2 quarts or more), this may increase already elevated blood pressure. This is especially the case if you are depleting your potassium and magnesium levels. Be sure to optimize your electrolytes. You may consider adding some magnesium and a little potassium to your enema solution. Follow the amounts as recommended by your doctor. You have to be very careful with potassium - do not use potassium without guidance from your doctor.
If you are doing a low volume (2 cup to 1 quart) enema, then the potential for this to increase blood pressure is low.
If you are doing a retention enema using a low volume of fluid, this also has a very low potential for increasing blood pressure
Monitor your blood pressure before - and after enema use for awhile. If you see you are stable, great. If you are not, then talk with your doctor and get on an appropriate plan. There are many methods for lowering blood pressure effectively.
In health,
Dr Lynch
