Questions on ProBiota 12 - 50 Billion CFUs - 60 Vegetarian Capsules

    • Can a person take too much probiotics? I have been on probiotics for about 6 months. But recently has switched to Seeking Health Probiota and taking the powder right now (switched to evening as you recommended).

My question, can a person take too much probiotic? How long should a person take a probiotic - should this be taken daily as maintenance?

Do probiotics help push out parasites?

      As always, appreciate your recommendations.
    • Hello - In short: 1. Yes a person can take too much probiotic 2. A person needs to take a probiotic daily just like a multivitamin, fish oil and vitamin D3 3. Yes specific probiotics can push out and prevent parasites. In depth: Yes, a person can take too much probiotic, especially if it is single strain or a couple strains. Example, I had a patient who was autistic and could not speak. There are numerous reasons for autistic children; however, it turned out that he was given high dose lactobacilus daily by his parents. I ordered a lab test which showed he had very elevated lactate levels and very elevated lactobacilus. Elevated lactate levels can cause speech problems. He was prescribed various nutrients to bring down the lactate and the lactobacilus was discontinued and contraindicated. That is a very potent example of taking too much probiotic. Yes, a person needs to take a probiotic daily which is multistrain and in not too high a dose. One needs to take a multistrain probiotic to ensure that there is not just one type of bacteria dominating the environment of the digestive system. There are numerous issues with probiotics which you must educate yourself on. Currently you are taking ProBiota 12 Powder at dinner. Taking ProBiota 12 Powder longer than 2-3 months is not recommended unless one has inflammatory bowel disease which is not healing. I recomend taking ProBiota 12 capsules after 1 month of ProBiota 12 Powder. ProBiota 12 Powder is recommended to take at 1/2 teaspoon 10 minutes after dinner for those having: - been on antibiotics, - digestive issues, - has not taken probiotics for a long period of time - has parasites - has yeast overgrowth - has an autoimmune disorder Yes, Probiotics can prevent and treat parasite infections. The main way probiotics prevent parasite infections is by preventing the parasites from binding to the intestinal wall. Probiotics themselves bind to the intestinal walls protecting us from environmental exposures and harmful bacteria from entering our bodies. For long term use, I recommend taking 1 capsule of ProBiota 12 taken 10 minutes after dinner. Should you have any questions, please post below. Best, Dr Ben

  • Sacch Boulardi1/14/12 6:49 PM
    • Hello Dr. Ben,
I was interested in takin your probiotic, but I am a new lyme disease patient on Antibiotics. Doesn't Sacch Boulardi protect you from c-diff. I didn't see that in your probiotic. Is your probiotic safe to take with Sacch Boulardi?
      Thanks,
      Ray
    • Hello - You are absolutely correct that Saccharomyces Boulardii protects you from C diff. I do not mix Saccharomyces bouldardii with ProBiota 12 because of a few reasons: 1) not everyone needs to have saccharomycese boulardii 2) increases cost 3) saccharomyces boulardii is not recommended to take long term without a break every now and then - while probiotics in ProBiota 12 are. I recommend that you take Saccharomyces Boulardii along with ProBiota 12 while you are on antibiotics. Make sure to take the ProBiota 12 at least 2 hours away from the antibiotics - and preferably in the evening. If you can, take the antibiotics in the AM and afternoon and not in the evening. If you have to take them in the evening, take the ProBiota 12 two hours after. You can take the Saccharomyces Boulardii anytime because the antibiotics will not kill them. Here are the Saccharomyces Boulardii: http://www.seekinghealth.com/saccharomyces-boulardii-probiotic.html Best Dr Ben

    • Dr. Ben,

I have hypothyroidism, acid reflux, chronic constipation for which I took enemas every day for over 20 years. That caused an anal ulcer, which had to be removed surgically. I was also diagnosed in 2010 with ulcerative colitis. I have constant bloating and gas when I eat vegetables and apples; therefore, I rarely eat vegetables. I sometimes drink V8 juice to get my veggies.

I'm also on 3 antidepressants which have caused a weight gain of 30 lbs. I used to be a size 12 but now am an XL to 1X. Yes, I walk or use my eliptical, and do Calanetics by Calan Pickney, to firm and lift, along with some weights and "The Perfect Push Up." I've been taking different probiotics from Natures Bounty that I buy at Walgreens. I still have hard stools at the beginning, so I need a good product that will help me. I read all your features on ProBiota 12 on Amazon, but wanted to see if I could find them cheaper elswhere. I guess not.

Please give me your opinion on the best Probiotic. I'm 60 years old.
      Thank you Doctor.

      Karen
    • Hi Karen - To me it sounds like there needs to be a discussion of lifestyle and dietary changes. There are things that you may be doing in your daily life that are causing constipation. I don't think a probiotic alone is the answer. ProBiota 12 is a fantastic comprehensive probiotic but I still don't think it is enough to eliminate your constipation. Your digestion appears very weak and that needs to be strengthened. I think Pro-Digestion Intensive - 1 to 2 capsules with each meal along with 1 to 2 capsules of PreGestion with a MEAL (not a snack) can help you. Do you still have acid reflux and taking antacids for? If so - that is step one in my mind - along with dietary changes. Best Dr Ben

  • Medium used for growing the microbes4/5/12 7:10 AM
    • the probiota 12 product - what medium is used for growing the microbes? I've seen other products that claimed to be soy or dairy free, but were grown in a medium that contained dairy / soy. I'd like to make sure that this is not the case with this product as I've heard that mediums containing dairy / soy are pretty much an industry standard.
    • Hello - All our probiotics are grown on a vegetarian medium - no milk. In health, Dr Ben

    • Dear Dr. Ben,

I feel very blessed to have visited this website and to have found you.

Please believe what I must tell you. I went to a masseuse and by using massage over a two hour interval she was able to dissolve my very large fibroid tumor. Three days later I passed a large "mass" of dead large, white worms rectally.

I have pretty much given up discussing this with the medical community. The reaction I get is they usually they laugh. I write in pleas of help. I refused surgery because I believe there must be a natural way to get rid of parasites. 100% believe it!

My mother and my Aunt both had uterine cancer. In short how do you rid yourself of parasites? You may email a information and help. It's very sad the medical community only believes in cutting.:(

I eat yogurt almost daily, Stoneyfield. Also, would I improve health wise with only stevia as a sweetener? They say sugar, chicken, beef, etc. feeds parasites....I have almost finished placing a totally organic garden....would it help to go completely raw and meatless for a month or two...beans for protein?

HELP, I am trying to piece the puzzle...lastly, do I need colonics. Basically, I have no medical issues except moderate osteoporosis which Mom had.
    • Hello -

That must have been a very traumatic experience passing worms like that.

Was the fibroid tumour actually the mass of worms or is the fibroid tumour still there? From the sound of it - the fibroid was actually a mass of worms. Correct?

Have you had a follow up ultrasound to see if the fibroid is gone?

I recommend that you work with a doctor who will:

      - evaluate you again to make sure the fibroid is gone and if not, then there are ways to deal with it using dietary, lifestyle and supplement chanages. Doctors that are great with this are found at www.naturopathic.org - I highly recommend you work with a doctor like this

      - evaluate your stools for parasites. Ask your doctor to run an O and P x 3 on you and to also run a CBC to check your eosinophil level. It also may be a good idea to check your MMA to determine your B12 status.

Colonics may be beneficial. Be sure to have electrolytes pre and post colonic.

I do not recommend Stoneyfield yogurt or any yogurt. I recommend most people avoid dairy and all wheat products (ideally gluten as well).

Some things which may help improve your digestive flora:

      • ProBiota 12 Powder: consider taking 1/4 teaspoon before bed to replenish healthy bacteria in high amounts
      • Saccharomyces Boulardii: consider taking 3 capsules before bed to replenish beneficial microbes which are known to assist in eradicating certain parasites and pathogenic yeast and bacteria.
      • Microbial Defense: consider starting by taking 1 capsule at dinner for 3 days and then increase to 2 capsules at dinner for 3 days. Then increase to 2 capsules at lunch and 2 at dinner. Then increase to 2 capsules three times a day.
      • Optimal Chia Seeds: sprinkle on salads, make chia seed gel or eat directly to assist in preparing health bowel movements.
      • Optimal Vitamin C Powder: mix 1 to 2 teaspoons in a liter water bottle and drink throughout the day - not all at once. This is to help process the toxins and chemicals being released from pathogenic bacteria and microbes.

Do get those labs done, find a naturopathic physician to work with via www.naturopathic.org or ask your friends and consider the above recommendations to get you started.

      Keep me posted.

      Dr Ben

  • Probiota 12 vs. Probiota Sensitive11/19/12 9:42 PM
    • What is the difference between Probiota 12 and Probiota Sensitive? Why would I choose one over the other?
    • Hello -

      Great question.

There are two big differences and these differences are especially important who are sensitive to probiotics.

      First:

      - Probiota 12 contains a strain of streptococcus whereas ProBiota Sensitive does not. There are some children which have a condition called PANDAS which makes them sensitive to strep bacteria. The strain of streptococcus which is found in PANDAS is pathogenic whereas the streptococcus found in ProBiota 12 is beneficial. However, it is best to avoid any form of streptococcus in those with PANDAS according to some physicians.

Second:- ProBiota 12 contains a prebiotic called inulin. This is how the beneficial bacteria receive their nourishment while in the intestines, If probiotics do not have a prebiotic, they have a harder time adhering to the intestinal wall.

ProBiota Sensitive does not have a prebiotic. This is because there are people who are sensitive to prebiotics. Those who are sensitive to prebiotics are those with pretty significant overgrowth of yeast or harmful bacteria. Prebiotics can feed the harmful bacteria as well so those with significant overgrowth of harmful bacteria can get ample gas and bloating for a few days while taking a probiotic with a prebiotic. Typically, the gas and bloating goes away in a few days anyhow but there are people who don't like to experience that for good reason.

Those also with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth do not do well with prebiotics so the ProBiota Sensitive is a good probiotic for them to use.

In short, ProBiota Sensitive is for those who are - well - sensitive; while ProBiota 12 is excellent for those who need a long term probiotic that is potent.

What I typically recommend is those new to probiotics start out with ProBiota Sensitive for a couple months along with Saccharomyces Boulardii. Then, after a couple months, cease the ProBiota Sensitive and switch to ProBiota 12.

However, if someone has inflammatory bowel disease, i will typically recommend ProBiota 12 Powder along with Saccharomyces Boulardii from the beginning as high amounts of probiotics is needed for these people typically.

Hope this helps. Of course, ask your physician what they believe is best for you.

    • I have just switched to Probiota 12, as I have ceased to consumer all dairy, wheat and gluten. With past probiotics, each came with different instructions on when to take them (i.e., time of day).

Could you advise best time of day to take these? Thank you.
    • Hello -

Probiotics should be taken after dinner for best effect.

  • Advice.1/2/13 1:57 PM
    • I wanted to seek your advice regarding Probiota 12. I've taken it twice (not on consecutive nights, about a week apart) and both times experienced nasty side effects (stomach pain, hot flashes, sweating, gas, cramping). Any idea what's going on? Should I discontinue? What do you recommend? FYI, I was diagnosed homozygous 677 variant a few months ago. Thank you.
    • Hello -

ProBiota 12 is a potent probiotic.

You may have significant yeast overgrowth and/or pathogenic bacteria which are being affected by the ProBiota 12 beneficial bacteria.

A few things you can do:1) Tapering up in the amount you are taking if you are experiencing such symptoms. Starting low and working up reduces the side effects of pathogenic bacteria/yeast die-off.

      2) Switch to ProBiota Sensitive - 1/2 capsule before bed. This does not have any prebiotics. After you do this along with Saccharomyces Boulardii and Microbial Defense, then go back to ProBiota 12 as maintenance.

You may want to start with Microbial Defense - 1/2 capsule - with dinner. If you feel fine, consider increasing the amount slowly over time until you get to 2 capsules three times daily - take only with meals.

You may supplement with beneficial bacteria - found in ProBiota Sensitive - at least 2 hrs after you take Microbial Defense. I also recommend you consider Saccharomyces Boulardii. Start with 1 capsule and increase to 3 capsules as you tolerate. You may combine the Saccharomyces Boulardii wiith the ProBiota Sensitive.

It would look like this once you tolerated the full amount of Microbial Defense:Breakfast: Microbial DefenseLunch: Microbial DefenseDinner: Microbial Defense2 hours after or before bed: ProBiota Sensitive with Saccharomyces Boulardii

Talk with your doctor about ordering a comprehensive digestive stool analysis.

    • Is your Probiota12 product GMO free and does the protective barrier system contain plastic?(ive read that some does)
    • Hello -

Our Probiota 12 Powder and ProBiota 12 capsules are non-GMO

The protective barrier system uses a carbohydrate base derived from vegetables :) - no plastic.

That's crazy that some use plastic. Not here.

  • Question about allergen contents2/2/13 10:20 AM
    • Hi,

I just recently purchased your product and see that it states milk/casein free and I wanted to be sure it doesn't contain any dairy at all? I also wanted to be sure it doesn't contain any yeast? I have a bakers yeast, yogurt, whey, egg and wheat allergy and want to be sure this is the right probiotic for me?

      Thanks
      Shannon
    • Hi Shannon -

Our probiotics do not contain any of what you are concerned about.

Our ProBiota 12 probiotic does not contain any yeast - nor does ProBiota Infant or ProBiota Bifido or ProBiota Sensitive.

Saccharomyces Boulardii is a specific type of beneficial yeast which most people tolerate and benefit from.

If you find you get excessive gas and bloating from ProBiota 12, then I recommend you switch to ProBiota Sensitive which is prebiotic free.

Prebiotics are necessary to help feed and grow healthy beneficial bacteria in our digestive tract; however, if one has very little beneficial bacteria to start with, the prebiotics may cause gas and bloating initially while the probiotics take hold. The gas and bloating - if it happens from ProBiota 12 - does stop within a few days typically. If not, then switch to ProBiota Sensitive for a few months - and discuss with your doctor.

      In health,

      Dr Lynch
