A short question with a book long answer!
There are many factors which may cause someone to crave sugar:
- Waiting to eat until famished will cause one to head straight for a sugar fix as blood glucose is low and needs to be restored. Thus, do not wait until you are starving. Eat when you notice you are hungry.
- Adding complex carbohydrates and protein to each meal helps slow the need to eat more often. These types of meals also limit the desire for sugar as blood sugar will be stable for hours. Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grain breads, beans, some vegetables, brown rice and some dry cereals. Protein is also found in many complex carbohydrates so that helps simplify eating as well.
- Avoid the high sugar snack foods. This is a catch 22 as you crave sugar but this point must be addressed as if not, you will find yourself constantly in the candy section. High sugar snack foods cause your blood sugar to spike and then you 'crash' shortly afterwards. You crash afterwards as your insulin has 'overshot' the amount it needed to secrete and thus has pulled all sugar from your blood causing you to have Reactive Hypoglycemia. This causes you to crave sugar again as you actually do need sugar. So avoid the high sugar snacks and Reactive Hypoglycemia attacks will not occur nearly so often - hopefully never.
- Have a snack food with you at all times. Great snacks are nuts and unsulfured raisins. Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts are excellent. Peanuts are high histamine foods so may not work well for many.
- If you have been on antibiotics, restoring the proper healthy bacteria to your gut may help. Most pathogenic harmful bacteria crave sugar - such as candida. Don't let harmful bacteria take hold and tell you what to eat. Supplement with a quality probiotic from the refridgerated section of your health store.
- If sad or depressed, people tend to crave simple carbohydrates for the high feeling. Exercise has been shown to reverse depression in 33% of subjects. So add exercise to your daily regime. It is not 3 days a week for 20 minutes any longer. It is now 6 days a week for 30 minutes. Find a buddy to do brisk walks with or join a local sports team.
Thank you for your excellent question. There are many that will benefit from you asking it - and I certainly hope you find it useful.
Thank you and I wish you well.

I am glad you asked this question as even my collegues ask me at times.
Homeopathy was developed by Samuel Hahneman in Germany many years ago. In fact, homeopathy is the reason why the FDA was created. The FDA wanted to control the quality of each remedy. This is especially important as some of the remedies contain actual minute amounts of the offending substance - such as mercury, arsenic, gonorrhea, chlamydia, poison oak and other noxious unpleasant things.
Homeopathy takes an absolute tiny amount of substance and coats lactose tablets with it. Basically, there is no amount of that substance on the tablet - only the energy of that substance. The higher the potency of a homeopathic remedy, the less there is of the substance. Sounds weird yes?
There lies one difference between cell salts and homeopathy. Homeopathy typically works based on the energetics of a substance while cell salts actually contain a small nutritional amount of one of the twelve tissue salts.
Cell salts were developed by Schuessler - another German. He believes that the living organism has twelve salts and all diseases stem from a deficiency of one or more of these salts. Therefore, supplementing with the proper cell salt may restore balance and remove the symptoms.
A person can combine one or more of the cell salts in order to restore health while homeopathy traditionally looks for only one correct remedy for a certain symptom picture. Therefore it is much easier to prescribe cell salts than homeopathy.
I strongly recommend that no one takes homeopathy without some guidance. Most health stores only sell 30C or 30X which is good. If you see a 200C potency do not buy it or take it without seeking professional guidance.
A table is below which is my interpretation of the difference between cell salts and homeopathy:
Cell Salt vs. Homeopathy
| |
Cell Salt |
Homeopathy |
| Safety |
quite safe |
can be dangerous esp if potency is 200C or above. recommend a homeopath prescribe them and not dose yourself. |
| Level of action |
cellular |
energetic so very deep this is why it can be dangerous |
| How to Take |
under the tongue or in water. can touch them and does not have to be away from food. |
under the tongue 20 minutes away from anything put in the mouth. cannot touch them |
| Cost |
cheap |
cheap |
| Ingredient Amount |
a small amount but it is measurable |
can be a small amount if 10C but nothing really at 200C or 1M potencies. |
| Duration of Use |
can be short or long term |
usually taken a couple times or only one dose especially if a high potency like 200C or 1M. |
Thank you for your question. It is a tough one to answer in only one page and takes some background knowledge of each which I assume you have. If not, you may ask for clarification.
I wish you well.

Dr Andrew Weil and Dr Deepak Chopra are some of the nation's leading experts in this realm. They have written books on it.
I will summarize some key points which are known to faciliate longterm health:
- Breathe: deep abdominal breathing is key. Oxygenation of all tissues is paramount especially as cancer and many diseases thrive in a low oxygen environment. Learn how to properly breathe and practice it religiously. There are many excellent books on the subject and we have some here on Seeking Health.
- Meditate: taking time to still your mind decreases stress which is a huge killer of many this day in age. The amount of damage stress does on us physiologically, mentally and spiritually is beyond words. Meditation puts our brain in a relaxed state quickly, efficiently and trains us to cope in stressful situations. Again, there are numerous classes, courses, tapes, and books on this subject and I urge you to learn it. Check out our book section and you will find some great resources there.
- Sleep: I will never forget this statement by our neurology professor who specializes in sleep medicine, Dr Nigel Ball, MD, "Perhaps women live longer than men because they sleep more than men." Ouch. He recommends eight hours a night. Get it. If you don't eat meals a couple hours before sleep, growth hormone is released and that is your body's repairing mechanism. Let growth hormone be secreted freely and for a long duration. Sleep is a great way to get it.
- Hydration: a local well-known naturopathic physician, Dr Molly Linton, ND states that a person 20% low in hydration is 75% low in energy - it affects you that much. Proper hydration is paramount in bringing nutrients to your cells and also carrying garbage metabolites away from them. I have seen many patients in our teaching clinic that do not drink any water and they have very odd and dangerous looking symptom pictures. Many suggest to drink about 8-10 cups of filtered water daily.
- Play: In France, insurance companies have lower premiums for people who take vacations and actually pay some companies kickbacks for having their employees head out for fun in the sun. What? It's true and that insurance company is laughing all the way to the bank as people who enjoy life typically have less serious illnesses. Don't just work to pay for your huge mortgage, fancy cars and dining bills. Downgrade to a smaller home, cheaper cars and cook whole food meals at home with your family. Take that huge savings and reward yourself and family often with a trip somewhere. It can be a simple local walk to a park or an exotic solo kayaking experience in the New Zealand fjordlands. You cannot do that if your monthly expenses are so huge. Sit down and figure out what you really want - what makes you happy? A big house and fancy cars or freedom from daily overhead?
- Enjoy your work: If you don't enjoy your work, leave it. How many lives do we get? I am not sure but if you wake up dreading heading to work, seek a counselor or occupational coach and see what they have to say. We spend one third of our lives sleeping, one third of our lives working and the other third is hopefully play. No one that I know mentions how important being happy in the workplace is. I think it is paramount. If you say there is no way to leave your job, you are likely not being honest with yourself. It is a hard change and the transition may be very difficult but in the end extremely rewarding. I left a high paying business that I built from the ground up to go to medical school. I was not passionate about that business anymore even though I had a six figure yearly income. I am now $150K in debt, stressed, low sleep and don't get to spend much time with my family. However, I know that once I graduate this will all be worth it and my life and my family life will be outstanding. I am passionate about medicine and I love waking up in the morning to go to work.
- Eat well: This is a no brainer but my goodness Americans - why are we so obese? Stress? Perhaps. Take a brief moment and look at your plate before you eat. Was that food around 60 years ago? If not, toss it out. It is crap. Eat whole foods that you or someone prepared at home lovingly with quality ingredients. It doesn't take long and it is way cheaper than even living off the lowest drive-in joint. You will feel better, medical bills will be less, drugs for indigestion, constipation and depression may likely be tossed in the garbage. There are tons of whole food cooking classes, books, videos, TV shows - watch, listen and learn it. It is easy. You can find some great books here on Seeking Health.
- Multivitamin: If you take a quality multivitamin, that is likely a good thing especially since our earth's soil is now void of many nutrients. Even organic foods now likely don't have the necessary essential nutrients as they used to 20 years ago. Don't buy a standard multivitamin. Do your homework and learn which is the highest rated. I have done that homework for you as well and have learned that DaVinci Labs ranks very high in the multivitamin world. Usana is the best but sadly they are a MLM company. They do have great products though.
- Probiotics: If you have ever taken antibiotics before, then you may want to supplement with quality acidophilis bacteria cultures to restore proper gut flora. A weak improper digestion sets up failure of all body and organ systems as digestion is what brings nutrients to your cells. Do not buy a probiotic unless it has lab tests showing how many live cultures are in it or it is in the store refridgerator.
- Exercise - I had to put it. Everyone says 3 days a week for 20 minutes but that is not right. It is actually supposed to be 30 minutes 6 days a week. Work up to it and get a trainer to help you. If you have no clue how to fit it into your day, make an appointment with a counselor or your primary care doc. They will sit down with you and help you figure out how to get exercise into your day.
Those are the biggest players. Of course there are more but in my opinion, if one follows a couple of the suggestions above, then life will more fulfilling and longer in duration. Who wants to live a longer unhappy life - so may as well set up the foundation of happiness first and then health will follow.
I wish you the best.

Gas & Bloating |
 |
After I eat anything, I get gas and my stomach blows out so much I have to buy pants two sizes bigger. Why is this? |
|
|
 |
| |
 |
Gas and bloating is an extremely common complaint. It also has various ways to occur making it sometimes a bit complicated to determine the cause.
One is your stomach acid may be insufficient. You may want to consider taking a betaine hydrochloride supplement to assist in making your stomach more acid. This will then trigger your pancreas to release enzymes for digestion as well.
If your stomach acid is sufficient, then it may be a lack of pancreatic enzymes. Taking a good pancreatic enzyme support supplement may resolve the gas and bloating if this is the case.
If your pancreatic enzymes are sufficient, then it may be due to a sluggish gall bladder. Your liver may need some assistance with either producing bile or releasing bile. A good naturopathic physician can determine which is needed. One has a hint of the bile/gall bladder being a problem when they get gas and bloating with fatty foods. Bile is what breaks down fats for you.
If you think all three may be the problem, then you may be eating while under stress. If you eat while in a hurry, while driving, while reading a book, while at a business meeting, while in an elevator, while yelling on the phone, or simply eating while not paying attention to eating, then of course you will have gas and bloating.
Why does stress cause gas and bloating? You have two nervous systems and each one dominates at any one time. Stress rules the sympathetic nervous system and that is your fight or flight. This causes most blood to go to your muscles and away from your digestive tract. The sympathetic nervous system also releases cortisol which shuts down the release of stomach acid.
The relaxing nervous system is called the parasympathetic nervous system and allows blood to flow to your digestive system. Another major component of the parasympathetic system is to relax the sphincters of the gall bladder and pancreas. There is no release of cortisol so you get a natural release of stomach acid. Thus, your digestive juices will flow very well if you simply eat when you eat. Do not multitask while you eat. Put both feet on the floor, appreciate the flavors, textures and chew chew chew.
This brings up another point. Do not drink while you eat. Drinking while eating dilutes stomach acids. You may want to drink 30 minutes before eating and 1 hour after eating. This allows your digestive enzymes, bile and acid to work in a concentrated fashion.
If you are noticing gas and bloating with carbohydrates like sugar, refined rice, refined breads, sweets, donuts, etc then you may have an overgrowth of yeast or a very low amount of beneficial bacteria like acidophilus. If you have brain fog, fowl gas, fatigue, allergic to many foods and crave sweets, then yeast may be part of the picture.
A history of antibiotic use wipes out most if not all beneficial bacteria in your gut making you susceptible to such vermin as yeast - which is candida. If taking antibiotics, many naturopathic physicians and european medical doctors recommend taking a probiotic or acidophilus while you take the antibiotic. This helps prevent bad bacteria from taking over.
Another reason for gas and bloating is simply that you are intolerant to that food and you should not be eating it. A classic food intolerant is cow milk. Many of us lose the lactase enzyme as we age making us susceptible to gas and bloating when we drink or eat dairy products. Don't forget that dairy products means anything made with milk - not just milk! If you think dairy is the culprit - remove it completely from your diet. Some say take a lactase enzyme supplement - you can do that if you like. Ask your doc.
Gas and bloating is a very common condition and can be complicated for an individual to suss out. It is quite easy for a naturopathic physician to determine.
View our selection of digestive supplements. You may find some for the stomach, pancreas or the liver. You may also find some supplements to reduce stress or anxiety - as that may be the root problem of your gas and bloating. If you believe yeast or candida is your problem, then you may want to consider ParaBiotic Plus.
The supplements may be found in our search by "Symptom" area. You may view the "Gas and Bloating" products here. |

Vit D Absorption |
 |
I tested low in Vit D. After 6 mo of 1 tbsp of Cod Liver Oil still am below desired level of D. |
|
|
 |
| |
 |
Cod Liver Oil contains about 800 IU of Vit D per tablespoon. The RDA is 400 IU. Physicians are currently recommending much higher doses of vitamin D in the form of cholcalciferol which is vitamin D3.
Vitamin D2 is garbage. Vitamin D3 is the recommended form to take by most doctors.
Cod liver oil is vitamin D3.
One doctor states that 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels raise by one point per week when one takes 2000 IU Vitamin D3 per day. So if your vitamin D level was 30 and you need to get to about 100, it will take 70 weeks to get there at 2000 IU per day.
People with autoimmune disease are commonly found to have low vitamin D levels. Research has shown that people should have their blood 25 OH vitamin D levels around 100.
A lab test which most doctors order to assess vitamin D levels is " serum 25 OH vitamin D ".
2000 IU of vitamin D3 is one drop of our liquid vitamin D3. Make note that this is one DROP of vitamin D3 liquid makes 2000 IU - not one dropperful!
It is recommended to take fat soluble vitamins with meals also - and vitamin D is fat soluble.
Now that it is becoming sunny outside, get out there 30 minutes a day in short sleeves and shorts if you can. There is no better way to get vitamin D than from the sun. It is harder to get vitamin D if you have dark skin or have sun screen on. Make sure you are not going to burn obviously.
If you find you are not absorbing vitamin D, you may not be producing or releasing bile acids from your gall bladder. If this is the case, you likely would not be absorbing other fats as well or fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin E or vitamin D.
A sign of your gall bladder not working well would be gas after fatty meals or stomach pains. Ask your doctor about gall bladder health.
Best,
Ben |
