  • Guttate Hypomelanosis vs Tinea Versicolor6/17/11 5:59 PM
    • I started seeing white spots and assumed it was tinea versicolor, but my latest dermatologist told me it was guttate hypomelanosis. It's common in middle aged women but noticed the spots when I was in my late 40s.

I have lived in the Southwest for 9 years now and I'm a believer that taking in short periods of sun at the noon hour with NO sunscreen will provide the best vitamin D. I also supplement with 4-5,000 IUs vitamin D and still can't get my levels up to 60 to 80. (optimal).

Although I tanned while younger, I stopped for many years and picked it up again when I did the research on obtaining vitamin D. That is when I noticed the little white spots mostly on arms, legs, a few on back.

My question is this..you mentioned to avoid sunning until the fungal issue gets resolved, but what if it is indeed guttate hypomelanosis? Should I still stop sunning because of the lack of pigment?

    • Hello - If your dermatologist did a skin scrape and did not find fungus, Tinea Clear will not benefit you most likely. It may still help because no one knows the cause of guttate hypomelanosis. Ask your dermatologist if they have done a skin scrape. Since your skin doesn't have much melanin, you should limit sun exposure on the white spots - or at least put sunscreen over the areas with guttate hypomelanosis. There are many many types of vitamin D3 and I recommend you consider a liquid vitamin d for best absorption. Each drop contains 2,000 IU of VItamin D3 so consider taking 3 drops of Vitamin D360 each day and have your doctor retest your vitamin D3 blood levels in three months. Given that vitamin D requires other nutrients to get absorbed, you may be low in those. Magnesium, vitamin K, boron, vitamin A and zinc are all required to get vitamin D absorbed and utilized by your body. Magnesium is the most important. Consider taking Optimal Multivitamin, 3 capsules with breakfast and 3 capsules at lunch, to get effective amounts of vitamin A, zinc and other nutrients required for skin health - like selenium. One should take a multivitamin daily in order to maintain cellular health. Bone Nutrients contains Vitamin K, Boron and Magnesium, along with Calcium. Given that you are a middle-aged woman, Bone Nutrients is helpful to support bone health and vitamin D absorption. These two go hand in hand. You cannot have healthy bones if you do not have adequate levels of vitamin D. My last recommendation is Biotin 5. Biotin levels are commonly low in those with hypo-pigmentation. Consider taking 1 capsule of Biotin 5 daily along with Optimal Multivitamin, Bone Nutrients and Vitamin D360. In summary, to support healthy skin and proper vitamin D levels: Vitamin D360, Optimal Multivitamin, Bone Nutrients and Biotin 5. I do recommend the use of a shower filter to reduce chlorine damaging your skin. Make sure you obtain one. I have more ideas for nutrients but let's stop here for now. This is enough to get started. Do let me know how your skin is doing with these recommendations! In health, Dr Ben Disclaimer

  • Beer Soak7/25/11 5:43 PM
    • How do you store the beer solution for 3 days for the anti fungus foot soak?

      Thank you
    • Hello - Given that it is only three days, I typically just cover it with foil securely and place it in a discreet area of the home that stays fairly cool - out of direct sun and the coolest rooms of the house. There is no need to keep it in the fridge. If using ProBiota 12 Powder as the main probiotic in the mixture, simply add 1/4 teaspoon to the mix every three days. ProBiota 12 is shelf-stable in room temperature for months. We recommend keeping it in the fridge for best potency but the few days the Beer Soak is used, the mixture will be just fine. I also highly recommend taking a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder internally as well as commonly nail fungus is due to weakened immune systems and overgrowth of yeast internally. Given that 70% of our immune system comes from our intestinal tract, you can see the importance of beneficial bacteria here. Taking Biotin 5 by Seeking Health - 1 capsule a day - also helps speed the growth of healthy nails (and hair). What also is excellent about Biotin is that it helps prevent the yeast/candida from reproducing. Biotin is a known reproductive inhibitor of yeast. To help kill the candida/yeast internally, consider taking Microbial Defense by Seeking Health. The ingredients of Microbial Defense are potent anti-candida. Begin with 1 capsule a day and then work up to 6 capsules a day. You will know you can increase the dose from 1 capsule to taking more by feeling great. If you take 2 or more capsules and you do not feel well, it is due to the candida dying off and releasing acetylaldehyde (very toxic). Acetylaldehyde is processed well by the body if it has the necessary nutrients to do so. Nutrients needed to process acetylaldehyde are Pantothenic Acid and N-Acetyl-Cysteine and Vitamin C. Seeking Health offers all these nutrients in pure, highly absorbable forms. For mild nail fungus, Tinea Clear should be plenty - the Beer Soak won't be needed. Simply apply Tinea Clear twice daily to the affected fungal nails. Should you have any further questions, please do ask. In health, Dr Ben

  • Severe Toenail fungus3/29/12 5:41 AM
    • Will Tinea Clear be effective on a long standing of many years of toenail fungus? You mentioned that it was good for mild toenail fungus. What regime do you suggest for a long standing toenail fungus?
    • Hello - Tinea Clear will help if the nail is not very thick. Simply apply Tinea Clear to your nails and toes, allow to dry and then wash off. Keep your feet in a dry environment - so change your socks often or go barefoot as much as possible. If the nail is really thick, then it less likely Tinea Clear will help. If your toenail is thick, I recommend considering having the toenails removed surgically and then moving forward from there. There are other ways to help eliminate thick nail fungus but they can take a year to work - or more. The Acidophilus Beer Soak is an effective method - but takes time. Best Dr Ben
