A few days without water and you are no longer living.
Even if you're drinking water, you may be far from optimal in terms of hydration. Hydration is defined as the process of causing something to absorb water and absorbing water takes way more than drinking.
If you're not absorbing water, you are the opposite of hydrated. You're dehydrated. Dehydrated is when you have lost a significant amount of water from your body.
Water, as a percentage of body weight, is very significant. As our body ages, we become more and more dehydrated for a variety of reasons. By weight, infants typically are 75% water, 1 year olds are already at 65% and by 50 years old, we're down to about 55%. As well, by age 19, women have typically 10% less water weight than males, comparatively speaking. This may be due to women generally having less muscle mass than men as muscle tissue is more hydrating.(1)

Roughly 65% of our water is stored inside our cells while the rest is found outside our cells - blood, lymph and extracellular space.
In plasma, the water portion of our blood, is 90% water (3). Plasma helps carry vitamins, minerals, blood cells and hormones all throughout our body and if you are dehydrated, you're not delivering these effectively to all the tissues in need.
Some of the common reasons for reduced water as a percent of body weight are:
- reduced muscle mass as we age
- reduced electrolytes as we age - especially potassium
- reduced kidney function (commonly due to oxidative stress, high homocysteine)
- reduced aldosterone production (which is produced by your adrenal glands)
- reduced thirst sensation so you're drinking less as you age
- weakened cell membranes so water leaks out of them

- Eat fresh food vs. processed foods.
