  • Powerful 5-HTP supplement
  • Supports healthy sleep, mood, and serotonin levels
  • Extended-release delivery for sustained support

Who Needs 5-HTP Extended Release

Your sleep, mood, and appetite all require serotonin to function normally.

5-HTP is the biochemical precursor to serotonin. Supplementing with 5-HTP can support healthy serotonin levels. This promotes restful sleep, feelings of joy, and normal regulation of appetite and cravings.

A slower-releasing form of 5-HTP may be ideal for those looking to support healthy mood or sleep.

5-HTP Extended Release contains 200 mg of L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). The extended-release tablets provide sustained 5-HTP support by releasing slowly over a few hours.

5-HTP Extended Release by Seeking Health provides a powerful serving of L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This natural compound is extracted from seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is the biochemical serotonin precursor.

This product provides a stronger serving of 5-HTP (200 mg) in a slower delivery method compared to our 5-HTP capsules (50 mg). The extended-release tablets are designed to release 5-HTP over a few hours. This slower-releasing format may be ideal for those looking to support healthy mood or sleep, who may benefit from more sustained support.

Your body uses 5-HTP to make both serotonin and melatonin. In the brain, serotonin influences mood, sleep, cognition, and appetite. As the primary neurotransmitter in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, serotonin governs GI motility and the speed of digestion.

Serotonin plays essential roles in mood regulation, supporting feelings of joy and calm. As a precursor to melatonin, it is central to your body’s sleep-wake cycle. It also supports the appetite center of your brain. Here, it is responsible for feelings of satiety and satisfaction. Healthy serotonin levels may also support normal regulation of appetite and cravings.

Serotonin synthesis is dependent on the availability of 5-HTP. However, 5-HTP is not abundant in a typical diet. Instead, your body manufactures 5-HTP from the amino acid L-tryptophan.

Both L-tryptophan and 5-HTP are considered serotonin precursors. When working to increase serotonin levels, supplementation with 5-HTP is a good option. This is because tryptophan is readily diverted to other functions in the body, such as niacin and protein production.

Tryptophan deficiency may be quite common. It is the least abundant amino acid in the human diet. Its absorption can be easily impaired from poor digestion. In addition, tryptophan-containing foods do not significantly increase 5-HTP levels.

You can support healthy serotonin levels by supplementing directly with 5-HTP. Unlike tryptophan, 5-HTP is not diverted away to other processes. 5-HTP is well-absorbed by the body. It readily crosses the blood-brain barrier without the requirement of transport carriers.

5-HTP supports normal:

  • Serotonin levels
  • Melatonin levels
  • Feelings of joy and calm
  • Appetite and satiation
  • Regulation of appetite and cravings
  • Circadian rhythms
  • Sleep
  • Cognition and memory
  • GI motility

5-HTP Extended Release by Seeking Health provides powerful support in a slow-release delivery method. For a gentler serving of 5-HTP designed to release quickly, try our 5-HTP capsules. Supporting healthy serotonin and melatonin levels has never been easier!

Customer Review

Great for Stress Relief

Contains no sensitizing fillers, which could cause reactions in sensitive people, at least from our family's experience. Had to throw out / reject a number of other brands due to this. Very good price and, as usual, another results-driven supplement by SH. Thank you! ~Laura.

Key Ingredients In 5-HTP Extended Release

  • 5-HTP: As a serotonin precursor, supports emotional well-being, cognition, and a healthy appetite. As a melatonin precursor, supports a healthy sleep-wake cycle.

Why 5-HTP Extended Release Works

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is your neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of joy and calm. The direct chemical precursor to serotonin is L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This is made from the amino acid L-tryptophan.

The production of serotonin depends on the availability of L-tryptophan. Unfortunately, it is challenging to get enough tryptophan into your body. Tryptophan is the least common amino acid in the human diet. Many people are lucky to bring in between 0.5 and 1.5 grams per day. Low protein diets, insufficient stomach acid, acid-blocking medications, and digestive disorders can all lead to tryptophan deficiency.

Once tryptophan from foods is digested and absorbed, your body must transform it into 5-HTP. This requires the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4). A deficiency in BH4 can lower conversion rates and 5-HTP levels.

In addition to dietary challenges, tryptophan is readily ‘stolen’ away to be used in other biochemical processes. Niacin deficiency, cellular stress, and low antioxidant levels can all play a role in stealing tryptophan and lowering 5-HTP levels.

Over 95 percent of your body’s L-tryptophan is used in the kynurenine pathway. This biochemical pathway produces a niacin-derived compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). This critical coenzyme is found in every cell where it is involved in hundreds of metabolic processes.

When niacin levels are low, your body activates tryptophan degrading enzymes. This draws tryptophan down the kynurenine pathway to make niacin and ultimately NAD+. It takes approximately 60 tryptophans to make one niacin. As you can see, producing niacin via the kynurenine pathway can play a huge role in lowering tryptophan levels. Inflammation, stress, and infections can all activate IDO and TDO enzymes that steal tryptophan down this pathway.

When a cell is low in antioxidants, the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) slows down. This enzyme converts tryptophan into 5-HTP. The TPH enzyme relies on BH4 as a cofactor. This cofactor is incredibly sensitive to oxidative stress. With low levels of antioxidant nutrients (such as vitamin C), BH4 levels can fall and slow the production of 5-HTP.

By supplementing with 5-HTP, you bypass the enzymatic steps involved in converting tryptophan to 5-HTP. 5-HTP is not stolen away for other biological processes as tryptophan is. 5-HTP supplementation has been shown to support healthy serotonin levels. In turn, this supports emotional well-being, a healthy appetite, and cognitive health. As the precursor to melatonin, 5-HTP also supports healthy sleep and circadian rhythms.

5-HTP Extended Release by Seeking Health provides a stronger serving of 5-HTP compared to our 5-HTP capsules. The unique tablets slowly release 5-HTP over a few hours for sustained support. For a more modest serving of 5-HTP in a quicker-release format, consider our 5-HTP capsules. Start supporting healthy levels of serotonin today with 5-HTP.

How to Enhance 5-HTP Extended Release

1

Consider Pulsing

Dr. Ben Lynch recommends using certain dietary supplements based on your need for them. Start with a partial serving and increase slowly over time to the full serving, only if needed. When you start feeling good, consider reducing the serving size, skipping days, or pausing supplementation. Then take again when you feel you need it (stressful day, traveling, chemical exposure, etc.), hence "pulsing." Work with your qualified healthcare practitioner to determine what's best for you.

2

Pairs Well With

P-5-P (Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate) as vitamin B6 is the cofactor required to convert 5-HTP into serotonin. L-5-MTHF a precursor of BH4, the cofactor needed to convert tryptophan into 5-HTP. 5-MTHF also acts as an antioxidant to replenish BH4 levels. Phosphatidyl Serine to support healthy cortisol regulation and stress resilience.

Doesn't dissolve

I really was hopeful to have an extended release form to help me sleep through the night. I am finding multiple days in a row that the tablet passes through undissolved. So, not helpful. I finally decided to use the rest of what I ordered by chewing into the tablet so I get some benefit. This is the first product from Seeking Health that hasn't been a 5 star experience. Maybe a difference in the manufacture would do it.
