Biopterin is an essential cofactor for neurotransmission and cardiovascular function. As biopterin is utilized, it must be regenerated. Regenerating biopterin is not a simple process. One must have balanced levels of homocysteine, glutathione, folate, iron and lower levels of reactive oxygen species. Biopterin is used to help produce dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, serotonin, melatonin and nitric oxide. Supporting the production of these neurotransmitters requires a number of nutrients ranging from: tyrosine, 5-HTP, vitamin B6, vitamin B5, vitamin C, iron, zinc, niacin, copper, to glutathione. If any of these nutrients are deficient, then neurotransmitter function may be compromised along with the production of nitric oxide.*
