What is StrateGene?

StrateGene is a genetic reporting tool that uses AncestryDNA (Version 2 only) OR 23andMe data.

By limiting report data to well-researched SNPs, a qualified health care practitioner is able to formulate a targeted testing and treatment plan – faster.

For the last two years, Dr. Lynch and his research team have analyzed SNP after SNP. In order for the SNP to meet inclusion criteria, it had to meet these standards:
  • The SNP is found in AncestryDNA V2 or 23andMe (current or past chips).
  • The SNP is found in a gene that belongs to a biochemical pathway that is covered by StrateGene.
  • There is a critical mass of published research related to the SNP.
  • The SNP has potential clinical implications as determined by published research.

What genetic tests can be used with StrateGene?

  • AncestryDNA: StrateGene only works with AncestryDNA tests purchased AFTER MAY 2016 (Version 2 only). Not compatible with earlier test data.
  • 23andMe: StrateGene works with all (past and current) 23andMe chips. However, if you purchased 23andMe after August 2017, some SNPs that were available with previous chips will be missing from your report.

Genes Evaluated by StrateGene

The SNPs analyzed and reported by Ancestry are different from those available from the most up-to-date version of 23andMe.

Key differences:

  • You get MAOA, MAOB, and DAO included with Ancestry V2 (not included on 23andMe-based StrateGene reports). These are "Super Seven" Genes!
  • You get a total of 2 more RSID#'s analyzed with Ancestry V2 than with 23andMe.

See below for more detail on which polymorphisms are analyzed by each option.

Should I order 23andMe still?

If you have not yet run 23andMe, you may still benefit from it if you are ok with not having the above SNPs in your results. It is still a good value for $99. If you want your StrateGene results to include MAOA, MAOB, or DAO, consider AncestryDNA V2 instead.

Is StrateGene right for you?

StrateGene isn’t for everyone. Is it right for you? In this video, Dr. Lynch clearly explains who - and who shouldn’t - use StrateGene.

How is StrateGene laid out?

Section 1 – Overview tables of known SNPs with gene, rsid, variant name, risk allele, and genotype. In addition “GSTT1 deletion”, if detected, plus the predicted NAT2 acetylator phenotype.

Section 2 – Results for each pathway with description, SNPs overlaid onto Pathway Planners, and details on SNPs found. The gene and SNP details include influencing factors on genes, SNP kinetic impact, and potential associated symptoms and conditions.

Section 3 – A discussion of “bonus SNPs”. These are SNPs for which there is not yet Pathway Planner graphics available, but which the research team wanted to include for added value.

A lot of information that is taking me on a journey
I really like how this report graphically maps one's SNP's on a diagram of different pathways in the methylation cycle. The red items show that I am homozygous, the yellow items show that I am heterozygous, and the green show that I have the wild type (naturally occurring). The cycle shows you which substances up-regulate and down-regulate the gene's expression. There is an explanation for each of the mutated genes that indicate what the gene does and various health challenges that can occur if your pathway isn't flowing completely as it should. This is definitely not a report where you would order it and see a list of supplements to take to address each issue. It is a report that can point out the whys of minimizing problematic substances from the body. I already knew that I had an MTHFR issue and should minimize folic acid, but another SNP showed me a problem with moving folinic acid intracellularly. Another portion of my pathway should me that I have some problems with my histamine pathway and should be aware of those issues. This is causing me to research my lifestyle and choices and monitor my symptoms for my own personal journey. To really get the most out of this report though, I think it would be best to work with a health practitioner who is armed with this data. Definitely worth the $45. And, it helps support the continued research in this important area. Review by Tina S. (Posted on 9/3/2016)
The pathways and Strategene are very important contributions!
We (everyone in our family has different manifestations of methylation / histamine problems) have tried a lot of things over the years - most of it feeling like total trial and error with almost no way to know ahead of time if something will work - nor any way besides how we're feeling to determine if anything is helping. Strategene coupled with labs gives a lot more structure to our efforts. Review by Karlie Cole (Posted on 9/2/2016)
The report I have been waiting for
I want to thank Dr. Lynch and his team for putting so much research time in this high quality tool, that -for the first time ever - gives us (patients, as well as health professionals) a fabulous insight of how certain genes are related to certain biochemical pathways. Also, in one view one can see which factors contribute to slowing down or speeding up the function of these genes and thus, your personal SNP's. The StrateGene Facebook group community is truely helpful, especially since Dr. Lynch answers our personal questions related to StrateGene, twice a month through a Facebook Live Q&A session. I would highly recommend buying a StrateGene report, if you take your health seriously and want to take your understanding of your 23andme data, to a higher level. A lot of puzzle pieces fall into place with my StrateGene report... Review by Joanna P. (Posted on 9/1/2016)
Great support
StateGen was a little slow on their upstart but they are showing all the signs of working through the unexpected glitches. So with a little patience you will find compassionate people at the helm. Their dedication to the matter shows from the support on Facebook to the crafted reports and videos, as well as Q&As. All this along with help to find the right practioner to interpret the usable information and help with the application. Review by Shannon K. (Posted on 8/26/2016)
Great Report easy to use. I love the visual component that the Pathway Planner offers along with the promoter and inhibiting factors for the genes. I did find it interesting that the NAT2 inhibition of the data I ran indicated a slow metabolizer where as other analyzing computations indicate a Intermediate metabolizer. Not sure if this is due to more genes evaluated by StrateGene or a different formula being used to calculate rapid normal intermediate or slow metabolizer. I would like to see a patient ready report that has the option to include or exclude the associated diseases. Review by Laura (Posted on 8/23/2016)
Great visual aid with concise information.
Being a student rather than practicing physician, my review may be from a different perspective with some questions. I first ran my raw data through free services of Genetic Genie and Dr. Yasko's app at NRI. Since I am taking methylation course here, I chose StrateGene for convenience of pathway planner as well as due to my building interest and faith in Dr. Lynch as a researcher. Upon comparing the reported SNPs I found a few discrepancies (which I have yet to learn about in detail). 1- Both Genetic Genie & Dr. Yasko app reported I am homozygous (Red) for BHMT-02 +/+ (TT) & heterozygous (yellow) for BHMT-08. Where as, StrateGene didn't mention it at all. Is it not clinically relevant? Being from a family with homocysteinuria issue, I thought its important. 2- Genetic Genie also reported a red for NAT2 R197Q (AA) but StrateGene is missing it. 3- Dr. Yasko's report shows a red for MTRR K350A (AG) +/+, while Genetic Genie is hetero (yellow) for the same SNP. Strategene is completely missing it. 4- Interestingly StrateGene is also clean -/- for VDR Taq1 AA (G) RS731236 where as both Genetic Genie and Yasko's report is red +/+ for the very same gene. 5- Similarly reporting is opposite for VDR-Fok (RS2228570) GG-G reported as homozygous red in StrateGene where as very same gene is reported as clean green -/- with FF. Beside the above mentioned issues that I have yet to understand, I love the fact most SNPs are marked in the pathway planner. I wish there was an additional page with full pathway planner and SNPs highlighted. I love the fact that it is quite concise reporting, good for medical professionals with time shortage but confusing for those with limited knowledge / laymen. Its great to have color coded inhibitors and promoters marked on the planner but in description part of report, they should be properly labeled and explained rather than just marking some abbreviations with up and down arrows. Some of this is the feedback I am giving on behalf of two other laymen friends I ran their reports for them. Kindly do include the references to any information provided for a particular SNP. I recently met my metabolic physician at VGH who completely disagreed to some of the material mentioned in SNP details area and I wished I had the references looked up, confirmed and printed out for the appointment. Over all, I am finding this report very helpful as while listening to the lectures I can note down pertaining information right on the report. Thank you. Review by Rahat I. (Posted on 8/18/2016)
Practical and saves time!
Very easy to use. This tool would be invaluable for any practitioner either starting out or those who are just too busy to sift through all the 'nonsense' genes. I'm a big fan of anything that can save me time :) You can see the information and snps are very well researched and I agree with Dr. B that it provides just the right amount of data that is useful. Over-analyzing too much data (some of it not even clinically relevant) becomes confusing for many. Easy to follow for both clients and practitioners to complement their treatment programs. I can't wait to see how it develops into the future. Well done! Review by EL (Posted on 7/19/2016)
Responsible, practical, reliable, actionable and science based!
StrateGene represents the gold standard in genetic interpretation. Ben’s understanding of the interplay between nutrition, environment and genes has produced an interpretive tool that helps make sense of the complexity of gene function and interaction. The pathways enable the practitioner to zoom out and see the bigger picture rather than obsessing over specific genes. Seeing the individual’s own gene profile colour-coded on the pathways just makes life so much easier - no more need for highlighter pens and messy scribbling! Ben has also provided detailed information about how each enzyme can be induced or reduced, which co-factors are essential and what steps could be taken to best support the individual’s genetic makeup. Responsible, practical, reliable, actionable and science based. Thanks Ben Review by Alessandro f. (Posted on 7/11/2016)
StrateGene is an invaluable tool for practitioners
StrateGene is the most comprehensive tool I have seen, and takes the delivery of personalized medicine to a new level. Coverage of the most SNPs and pathways including Folate, Methionine, Transulfuration, Biopterin and Histamine. The report clearly describes what inhibits or induces the genes (lifestyle, medications, foods, supplements etc.) and essential nutrient cofactor information. StrateGene also incorporates each individual’s specific SNP variations in detailed Pathway Charts that are visually appealing and easy to comprehend. Accompanying FAQs and ready access to the underlying research makes StrateGene an invaluable tool for practitioners. Review by Dr. K. (Posted on 7/11/2016)
A tool that engages patients
I was involved in the development of StrateGene, a process that was at times tedious and painstaking. But after beta testing with almost a dozen patients in my practice, my experience with StrateGene has been one of joy! Patients and I can print and get familiar with a detailed report in advance. This alone makes office visits so much more productive. I see increased patient engagement, less confusion. StrateGene is a great tool for busy clinicians, as patients leave the visit with concrete, actionable advice that informs their choices/lifestyle for the better. Review by J. N. (Posted on 7/8/2016)
The StrateGene Pathway Analysis is an amazing tool that allows us to see not only what a person’s genetic makeup is, but also which epigenetic factors may be directly contributing to health or disease based on this. The trend has been to look at genetic mutations in isolation and irrespective of how they interact with other body systems and genes. Having a visual overview of how these mutations impact various pathways in the body and which factors can promote or inhibit their activity makes this a one-of-a-kind tool that will undoubtedly change how healthcare professionals customize advice based on genetics! Disclaimer: I was involved in the creation of StrateGene. Review by Alison B. (Posted on 7/8/2016)
Strategene is just perfect!
I'm super excited to have Strategene available. Strategene simplifies the the report down to the most researched and relevant snps. The problem with other systems have been that they either had too little or too much data. Strategene is just perfect! It provides the most researched and relevant snps, with information as to what they are and what their impact may be, and the bonus is that it shows them within the pathway planners that Dr. Lynch developed. I was doing this manually. Strategene is a more complete product to review and provide my patients. Stratgene takes the best of all of the other reporting systems and makes the report better with the addition of the pathways. Review by Dr. B. (Posted on 7/8/2016)
StrateGeneTakes the confusion and angst out of understanding genetic polymorphisms. It places the raw data into the biochemical pathways. StrateGene is easy-to-follow, clinically relevant and, most of all, user-friendly! Kudos Dr. Ben and all involved! Dr. Jess Review by Dr. A. (Posted on 7/7/2016)
