  • Safety of high levels of antioxidants?4/21/14 10:32 PM
    • I remember recently hearing that high levels of anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E were actually associated with increased health issues. What is the thinking here?
    • Good afternoon,

Thank you for contacting Seeking Health regarding high levels of anti-oxidants such as vitamin E.

High level of anti-oxidants must be quantified. The amount of vitamin E in any of Seeking Health products are not ‘high dose.’ It also depends on the individual and how the study was done. As I recall, the study done on vitamin E was not done properly. One example when anti-oxidants are not desirable is prior to exercise as it is the oxidation which turns on the health benefits of exercise. Taking anti-oxidants an hour or so post-exercise are useful and protective.

      Thank you for your time,

      Michelle

  • Optimal Multi Chewable 4/25/14 7:22 AM
    • I'm interested in getting these for my kids (both with MTHFR) but am concerned about the soy as Vit E - is it non GMO? Also, do you have a similar product that is mag stearate free? I notice that many other of your products are… Thank you for your help, and for your wonderful products and site!
    • Good afternoon,

The soy in the product is non-GMO.  Unfortuntely, we do not have a chewable vitamin that does not contain magnesium stearate.

      Thank you for your time,

  • folate4/28/14 9:39 AM
    • Is calcium folinate a healthy source of folate? Or is it pretty much the same as folic acid?
    • Good morning,

Folic acid and folinic acid (also known as calcium folinate or Leucovorin) are very different.  Folic acid is a synthetic, manmade nutrient which is very inferior to other active forms of folate.  Folic acid does nothing biologically until it goes through a number of enzymes in the body.  Another problem with folic acid is that competes with better forms of folate – such as folinic acid and methylfolate. The body uses folinic acid and methylfolate to produce things. Folic acid doesn’t naturally.  Folinic acid is an active form of folate which participates in DNA base formation.  Folinic acid also supports the production of methylfolate but has to go through the MTHFR enzyme to do so.

      I hope this information helps.

      Thank you for your time,

      Michelle

  • How Does Heat Affect These?9/9/14 3:36 PM
    • This summer I ordered these multivitamins, plus the regular kids and the adult, and I am wondering if they lost their effectiveness by sitting in the sun for hours. They were in a metal mailbox in 100 degree heat for about 8 hours - after having been in the mailman's truck. For the past month, everyone seems a bit off. Did the excessive heat "kill" the vitamins? If so, should I only order vitamins during cold months?
    • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Seeking Health. Our multivitamins are shelf stable for two years from the date of manufacture. While they maintain potency best if kept in a cool, dark place for storage, being exposed to the heat for only eight hours should not cause any significant damage to the nutrient content. The heat would especially not cause the vitamins to be harmful if taken. The contents of our multivitamins are actually more likely to be affected by moisture and oxidation than by heat exposure - since the bottles were sealed, there should be no cause for concern. I hope this helps. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

  • concerns about vitamin A9/14/14 9:27 AM
    • hi I am trying to find out if the amount of vitamin A in the chewable vitamins are safe enough for a 4 year old boy, because I've read a lot of the dangers of excess vitamin A.
    • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Seeking Health regarding the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable. The NIH sets a tolerable Upper Limit for Vitamin A intake at 3,000 IU for children between 4 and 8 years of age. This is only for retinol or ester forms, or animal sources of Vitamin A. Our Optimal Multivitamin Chewable contains 4,500 IU Vitamin A per two-tablet serving. However, only 2,000 IU is from a retinol form. The remainder is from natural beta-carotenes, which are safe "pre-vitamin" forms of vitamin A that do not factor into the Upper Limit requirements. This would put the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable below the Upper Limit recommendation, and it should be safe for children 4 years of age and older. As always, we would recommend discussing this product with your child's healthcare provider prior to administration. Thank you for your time.

  • Why Vitamin D3 and not Vitamin D210/28/14 9:50 AM
    • Why you do not use Vitamin D2 which so many studies have shown is much more absorbable than Vitamin D3?
    • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Seeking Health regarding the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable. We choose to use D3 as cholecalciferol in this formula because cholecalciferol, also known as Vitamin D3, is more biologically active in the body than vitamin D2.1 Most people do not get sufficient vitamin D3 in their diet, and the synthetic vitamin D2 that is often added to dairy products is an inferior form of this vital nutrient, and is added in minimal amounts. Vitamin D3 occurs naturally in fatty fish, cod liver oil, egg yolks, and beef liver. Our Vitamin D3 in the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable contains only cholecalciferol derived from cholesterol in sheep’s wool, making it suitable for vegetarians. I am not familiar with any studies that suggest D2 is the superior form. Thank you for your time.

  • Iron in chewable multivitamin11/14/14 7:41 AM
    • Hi! My kids are 7 and 9 and I have always heard that kids multivitamins should not contain any iron. Your chewable multi does contain iron. Is this ok for my kids to take and if so, how many should they take a day?
    • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Seeking Health regarding the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable. Iron can be toxic when consumed in excess - so parents are cautioned against providing their children with vitamins containing iron (or too much iron). If you are interested in a multivitamin without iron, you might consider our Kids Optimal Multivitamin, which Dr. Lynch has formulated specifically for children. That said, the Daily Recommended Intakes for Iron (National Institutes of Health) are as follows:

Table 1: Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for Iron
      AgeMaleFemalePregnancyLactation
Birth to 6 months 0.27 mg* 0.27 mg*
      7–12 months 11 mg 11 mg
      1–3 years 7 mg 7 mg
      4–8 years 10 mg 10 mg
      9–13 years 8 mg 8 mg
      14–18 years 11 mg 15 mg 27 mg 10 mg
      19–50 years 8 mg 18 mg 27 mg 9 mg
      51+ years 8 mg 8 mg

      * Adequate Intake (AI)

Depending on your child's age and diet, the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable may still be a good choice. However, because the correct dose for each person must be determined in light of various factors (e.g. weight, diet, metabolism, etc.), we suggest consulting with your doctor or healthcare provider to determine what will be appropriate for you or your children. Thank you for your time.
