Methylation happens when a small molecule called a methyl group is added to other molecules. When methylation doesn't work correctly, it can lead to the buildup of homocysteine—an amino acid—in the blood. Vitamins B12, B6, and folate help convert homocysteine into usable compounds like cysteine and glutathione.
