Hydration

A few days without water and you are no longer living.

Even if you're drinking water, you may be far from optimal in terms of hydration. Hydration is defined as the process of causing something to absorb water and absorbing water takes way more than drinking.

If you're not absorbing water, you are the opposite of hydrated. You're dehydrated. Dehydrated is when you have lost a significant amount of water from your body.

Water, as a percentage of body weight, is very significant. As our body ages, we become more and more dehydrated for a variety of reasons. By weight, infants typically are 75% water, 1 year olds are already at 65% and by 50 years old, we're down to about 55%. As well, by age 19, women have typically 10% less water weight than males, comparatively speaking. This may be due to women generally having less muscle mass than men as muscle tissue is more hydrating.(1

Some organs are very high in water and if you're dehydrated, so are they.

  • Lungs are 83% water
  • Muscles and Kidneys are 79% water
  • Brain and Heart are 73% water
  • Skin is 64% water
  • Bones are 31% water (2)

Roughly 65% of our water is stored inside our cells while the rest is found outside our cells - blood, lymph and extracellular space.

In plasma, the water portion of our blood, is 90% water (3). Plasma helps carry vitamins, minerals, blood cells and hormones all throughout our body and if you are dehydrated, you're not delivering these effectively  to all the tissues in need.

Some of the common reasons for reduced water as a percent of body weight are:

  • reduced muscle mass as we age
  • reduced electrolytes as we age - especially potassium
  • reduced kidney function (commonly due to oxidative stress, high homocysteine)
  • reduced aldosterone production (which is produced by your adrenal glands)
  • reduced thirst sensation so you're drinking less as you age
  • weakened cell membranes so water leaks out of them

Water must have electrolytes in it to be truly hydrating. Seeking Health has developed some specific supplements to support your body's hydration levels.

Optimal Electrolyte contains the electrolytes of potassium, magnesium and sodium in addition to nutrients which help increase absorption of these nutrients.*  In order to move electrolytes into the cell, one needs to have sufficient energy to do so and nutrients of taurine, niacin, creatine and D-Ribose help facilitate that.

Optimal Potassium Powder provides 500 mg of potassium bicarbonate which provides 11% of your daily requirement of potassium. This makes a refreshing lemon-lime fizzy drink when mixed with filtered water!

Optimal Creatine provides creatine bound to magnesium which helps facilitate absorption.* If creatine levels are low in muscle, muscles are less hydrated which makes them more prone to fatigue, weakness, soreness and injury.

Optimal PC provides a blend of phospholipids which are present in significant amounts in every single one of your cell membranes. If your cell membranes are weak, then they will be dehydrated and can lead to increased cell death. Phospholipids are also needed to help bile so it flows out of your gallbladder.

Optimal Fish Oil supports cell membranes especially in combination with Optimal PC as phosphatidylcholine works best in the presence of DHA.

PQQ Lozenge supports hydration in that it helps support a balanced oxidative stress level.* If levels of free radicals or oxidative stress are too high, then cell membranes may become damaged. Damaged cell membranes lead to intracellular water loss and thus cellular dehydration.

HomocysteX Plus or Active B12 with L-5-MTHF Lozenges are helpful for those who exercise for longer periods of time or more intensely as exercise increases sweating, loss of electrolytes and increases homocysteine. Nutrients found in both HomocysteX Plus and Active B12 with L-5-MTHF Lozenges may help support a healthy homocysteine level during exercise.*

Adrenal Cortex supports adrenal health.* If adrenals are fatigued, then one has higher susceptibility to peeing out more water. Frequent urination, dizzy upon standing and/or ringing in the ears are signs of adrenal fatigue.

More solutions to help your hydration:

  • Drink filtered water. Chlorine is dehydrating, and often found in unfiltered water.
  • Shower with a chlorine shower filter as chlorine dehydrates your skin.
  • Limit diuretics such as caffeine and high sugar drinks.
  • Lift weights as muscles can store a lot of water.
  • Eat fresh food vs. processed foods.
  • Decrease inflammation as it is dehydrating. Do this by fighting infections, reduce overtraining, get proper sleep, eat anti-inflammatory vs inflammatory foods.
  • Do not overeat as all types of food are pro-inflammatory in high amounts and decrease water inside your cells.
