7 things most prenatal vitamins won't tell you about folate

And why the form of folate in your prenatal may matter more than the dose.*

If you've been comparing prenatal vitamins, you've probably seen the word "folate" on almost every label. But here's what most brands don't explain: not all folate is the same — and the difference between forms is worth understanding before you choose. This article is educational, not medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any supplement.

01

Folic Acid

Most prenatal vitamins still use synthetic folic acid

Folic acid is the synthetic, oxidized form of folate. It's not naturally found in food — it's manufactured. Your body needs to convert it into active folate before it can be used, and that conversion depends on a specific enzyme working efficiently. For many women, that process works well. But for a significant number, it may not — and that's where the story gets interesting.

02

MTHFR & Genetics

Up to 40–60% of women carry a gene variant that may affect how their body processes folic acid

Research indicates that a large proportion of women carry a variant of the MTHFR gene. This variant may affect how efficiently the body converts synthetic folic acid into the active form it uses. For these women, a prenatal that provides only folic acid may not be delivering folate support in the most readily usable form.*

Confirm your MTHFR status with your healthcare provider if you'd like more information.
03

Active Folate

Methylfolate is the active form — it requires no conversion*

L-methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the biologically active form of folate. Unlike folic acid, it doesn't require the MTHFR enzyme to convert it — it's already in the form your cells can use.* It's also the form naturally found in dark leafy greens. A prenatal that provides methylfolate supports healthy folate levels through a different pathway than folic acid does.*

04

Dual-Folate Formula

There are two types of active folate — most prenatals only include one

Most "methylfolate prenatals" provide only L-methylfolate. But there's a second active form — folinic acid (calcium folinate) — that supports healthy DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and neurotransmitter function through a complementary pathway.* Optimal Prenatal from Seeking Health is formulated with both: Quatrefolic® L-methylfolate AND calcium folinate. Most prenatals on the market don't provide this dual-folate approach.

05

Vitamin B12

The B12 in your prenatal matters too

The most common B12 form in supplements is cyanocobalamin — a synthetic form the body needs to convert into its active versions: methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. Optimal Prenatal uses MecobalActive®, a patented ingredient that provides both active B12 forms in a single supplement — something most prenatals don't include.*

06

Choline

Most prenatals are dramatically low in choline

Choline is an essential nutrient that nutrition experts increasingly recognize as important during the preconception period and throughout pregnancy.* Yet many leading prenatals include only 0–55mg — a fraction of recommended intake levels. Optimal Prenatal provides 250mg of choline via VitaCholine® per serving, more than most prenatals on the market.*

07

Mineral Bioavailability

Mineral forms determine how much your body can actually absorb

Many budget-friendly prenatals use "oxide" forms of minerals — inexpensive but less bioavailable. Seeking Health's Optimal Prenatal uses Albion® chelated minerals throughout — widely regarded in nutritional science as among the most readily absorbed forms available.* The formula also includes myo-inositol, CoQ10, S-acetyl glutathione, ginger root, and milk thistle — a combination not found in most prenatals.*

Why Seeking Health created Optimal Prenatal

Formulated by Dr. Ben Lynch, ND — because he couldn't find a prenatal he trusted

Dr. Ben Lynch — author of the bestselling book Dirty Genes (HarperCollins) and recognized voice in Epigenetics — designed Optimal Prenatal because he couldn't find a prenatal vitamin he trusted for his own patients.

The result: 35 bioavailable nutrients, dual active folate forms, no synthetic folic acid, and every lot is tested for heavy metals.*
