Hi Chelsey -
Thank you for your review ;)
We work hard on minimizing trash on our planet which is why we have these packages. The first time opening can be a surprise but the next time you'll be good!
Your point about choline and iron:
- Choline is extremely important for sure. Over 90% of pregnant women are choline deficient. This is why we have Optimal Prenatal which has choline in there along with Betaine. The betaine produces choline.
Choline should be coming from the diet ideally. 1 egg contains nearly 150 mg of choline. So a 3 egg breakfast is 450 mg right there. 3 oz of salmon is nearly 200 mg of choline. Beef liver is a whopping 350 mg of choline in 3 oz.
As a supplement, too much choline can make a woman feel depressed, anxious or have gut issues. This is why we combine using betaine in Optimal Prenatal vs loading up on high amounts of choline.
Getting the nutrients you and baby need must also be well tolerated by momma.
- Iron: Iron is inflammatory. Some women need more iron than others and some women need absolutely none due to genetic issues. First trimester, iron needs are quite low and they increase in the 2nd and even more in the 3rd. Many women who purchase our prenatals have history of miscarriage, pregnancy complications or infertility. All of these are associated with inflammation to some degree. Thus, we do not include iron in our prenatals.
Additionally, iron and calcium compete for absorption. So if you're looking for a prenatal that has iron and calcium, you won't be getting much of the iron. Calcium inhibits iron absorption. This is another reason why we don't include it.
Just because it's on the label doesn't mean your body will use it.
Calcium: it's extremely bulky and fluffy which is why we don't have it in Prenatal Essentials. Many women want to limit how many capsules they swallow each day. Optimal Prenatal has a lot of calcium and a lot of magnesium which is why it's 8 capsules per serving.
Neural tubes and spinal health: this is a methylation issue - not a single ingredient issue. It's not a folate issue, it's not a choline issue and it's not a B12 issue. It's purely how well a woman's methylation cycle is working. The combination of our nutrients in all our prenatals support healthy methylation - which is why we have many thousands of women successfully using our prenatals around the world.
If you're feeling good, and eating well, and your iron levels are where they need to be, Prenatal Essentials is an excellent choice.
If you have a history of infertility, pregnancy complications or miscarriage, then Optimal Prenatal is highly recommended to support a healthy pregnancy.
Should you need iron, we have Iron Chewable or Optimal Iron available - and they should be taken in the evening after dinner - away from your calcium containing prenatal vitamins.
In health,
Dr. Lynch
