Why I Formulated Optimal Prenatal

My target was simple: formulate the best prenatal in the world. I recently re-evaluated every nutrient and form in this formula against current research and updated where the science justified it.

  • D3 is dosed per the research on pregnancy and lactation needs. 4,000 IU/day was the safest, most effective dose in a controlled pregnancy trial¹. Supports healthy bone development and immune system function.†
  • K2 (MK-7) works with D3 to direct calcium into bone, not soft tissue³, and has been shown to support healthy bone mineral density in mothers and the developing baby⁴.†
  • Boron supports healthy bone metabolism alongside calcium, magnesium, and D3⁵.†
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin (10:2 ratio) is based on research on infant visual development specifically, not adult eye-health ratios⁶.†
  • Choline and myo-inositol support neural tube and brain development not just during fetal development but for the baby's entire life⁷ ⁸ ⁹.†
  • Ginger, thiamine, and B6 support comfort through pregnancy-related nausea¹⁰.†
  • Chelated trace minerals absorb well and are gentle on a sensitive stomach.†
  • A full B-complex supports energy and mood at meaningful doses.†
  • CoQ10 and glutathione support healthy antioxidant status during pregnancy, when oxidative stress naturally rises¹¹ ¹² ¹³†
  • Both retinyl palmitate and beta-carotene forms of vitamin A are included because many women carry BCO1 variants that limit their ability to convert beta-carotene into active vitamin A on their own¹⁴. Vitamin A supports immune system function, eye development, and your baby's bone formation.†
  • Folate as both L-5-MTHF (methylfolate) and calcium folinate (folinic acid): methylfolate feeds the methylation cycle; folinic acid supports DNA base formation and new cell division, including healthy blood cell formation. Folate, B12, and B6 together support healthy homocysteine metabolism throughout pregnancy¹⁹ ²⁰.†
  • B12 as both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin: methylcobalamin works with folate on methylation and nerve health; adenosylcobalamin is the mitochondrial form your cells need for energy production²¹.†

On purpose, not by accident:

  • No iron. It competes with calcium for absorption¹⁵ and is pro-inflammatory for many people. If you need it, add our Iron with Cofactors or our Iron Chewable.
  • No DHA. Most prenatals that include it don't include enough to matter¹⁶. Pair this with our Fish Oil for real EPA and DHA at doses that count, tested for purity and rancidity.†
  • Headaches, irritability, or trouble sleeping? Switch to Optimal Prenatal MF, which uses less stimulating forms of folate and B12²¹. As far as I know, we're the only company formulating a prenatal this way.†

Fertility Takes Two

If you're trying to conceive, remember that fertility takes two. Sperm quality matters as much as egg quality, and sperm take approximately 3 months to fully develop and mature.

I recommend your partner begin taking Optimal Man at least 3 months before you plan to conceive. This provides the methylation support, antioxidants, and nutrients needed to support healthy sperm development and DNA integrity during that critical window.†

Continue Through Breastfeeding

These recommendations don't stop at delivery. Breast milk is only as nutritious as the mother producing it. Every nutrient your baby receives through breast milk comes directly from your body's stores.

Continue taking Optimal Prenatal, Fish Oil, and Iron, throughout breastfeeding to provide nutrient-dense milk to your baby while protecting your own nutrient status. Many women become depleted during breastfeeding because they stop supplementing.†

Optimal Prenatal Is Right for You If:

You've experienced pregnancy loss, difficulty conceiving, or complications before, and you want to give this pregnancy every nutritional advantage you can.
Research has looked at antioxidant status and homocysteine levels in women who've faced these challenges¹ ⁵ ³ — Optimal Prenatal doesn't address those experiences directly, but it does provide active folate, B12, choline, and antioxidant support (glutathione, CoQ10) at levels many standard prenatals don't include, so your foundational nutrition isn't the thing left to chance this time.†

You're actively trying to conceive.
Preconception nutrient status supports healthy egg quality and early fetal development before a pregnancy test even turns positive. Choline supports fetal brain development from the earliest weeks¹, and myo-inositol supports neural tube development through a separate pathway from folic acid².†

You want the most comprehensive prenatal available.
With 31 researched ingredients—including nutrients most prenatals skip entirely—Optimal Prenatal provides intensive nutritional support for women who want to give themselves and their babies every possible advantage.†

You have genetic variations affecting nutrient metabolism.
Whether you have MTHFR, MTHFD1, DHFR, FOLR, PEMT, BCO1, or other polymorphisms, Optimal Prenatal provides bioavailable nutrient forms that work regardless of your genetic makeup—including methylfolate, folinic acid, methylcobalamin, choline, and preformed vitamin A.†

You want mood support during pregnancy.
The choline-inositol combination supports healthy neurotransmitter balance, helping maintain a positive mood throughout the hormonal changes of pregnancy.†

You're concerned about environmental exposures.
S-acetyl glutathione provides antioxidant support for a healthy response to the glutathione-depleting effects of common medications (Tylenol) and environmental exposures (chlorine, formaldehyde, arsenic).†

You experience morning sickness or digestive sensitivity.
Vitamin B6 (as P-5-P) and ginger root are included specifically to support digestive comfort during pregnancy.†

You're breastfeeding or postpartum.
Continue Optimal Prenatal after birth to replenish nutrients depleted during pregnancy and support healthy milk production.†

Optimal Prenatal Is NOT Right for You If:

You're sensitive to methylated nutrients.
If you experience extreme nervousness, irritability, sleep issues, or headaches when taking methylfolate, methylcobalamin or choline, choose Optimal Prenatal MF instead—it provides the same comprehensive support with non-methylated, bioavailable B vitamins.†

You want the essentials only.
If you're generally healthy with no prior pregnancy concerns and eat a very nutrient-dense diet, our Prenatal Essentials (2 capsules daily) may be sufficient for your needs.†

Key Ingredients

Inside the Uncompromising Quality of Our Ingredients

Optimal Prenatal is a thoroughly researched, nutrient-dense prenatal multivitamin formulated by epigenetics expert, Dr. Ben Lynch.†

  • Active Folate (Quatrefolic®)
Two natural folates are added by Dr. Lynch. There is no unnatural folic acid. L-methylfolate supports healthy methylation while folinic acid supports healthy blood cells, platelets, skin and neurotransmitters.†
  • Bioavailable B12 (MecobalActive®)
'Adeno' and 'Methyl' are known as superior forms of vitamin B12 that your body can readily utilize, acting as coenzymes to power important enzymes. Bioactive B12 supports healthy energy production, detoxification and is required to utilize folate for methylation processes.†
  • Ginger Root & B6
Support mother's comfort and digestion due to occasional nausea or morning sickness.†
  • Vitamin A
This essential vitamin is critical for healthy fetal development. Most prenatals do not use retinyl palmitate, the active form of vitamin A. Dr. Lynch uses this form of vitamin A as it supports healthy eye, skin, bone, and immune system health in both the mother and developing baby.†
  • Choline(as Choline bitartrate)(VitaCholine®)
Choline is an essential nutrient that supports the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in normal brain and nervous system function, including learning, memory, and muscle control. Choline also supports liver health by contributing to the formation of cell membranes and plays a role in normal lipid metabolism.†

    So sad

Every day that I have to take the vitamin, I’m so sad because of the strong taste from the orange capsule. I have emailed customer service and asked if I could get different one and they said they don’t know the timeline. I hate spending $67 on a bottle, but it is good ingredients. I just hate the taste.

    Sarah,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. We're truly grateful for your feedback, and we're sorry the taste of the orange insert has made taking your vitamin such an unpleasant part of your day. We also really appreciate you recognizing the quality of the ingredients, and we understand how frustrating it is to invest in a product you believe in and still dread taking it.

The good news is that a newer batch is on the way, and we expect to have it in very soon. Unfortunately, we don't have a way to notify customers when it arrives, so we'd encourage you to keep checking in with us on availability.

Thank you again for your patience and for sticking with us. We're looking forward to getting the new batch into your hands.
